The myth of the Holy Grail dates back to the twelfth century, yet it clearly speaks to the contemporary world. In The Fisher King, screenplay writer Richard LaGravenese retools this medieval legend by setting it in modern day New York or Terry Gilliam (Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen) innovatively taps into the many moods and milieus of the city.   Only the King, lying groaning on his litter, was unable to rise and take the healing of the Grail. In the morning, the traveler would thank his hosts and leave. From these few, the legend grew of the Fisher King--the King of the Lost Kingdom of the Grail. The Coming of Parsival.

The fisher king wound is in the male, generative, creative part of a man’s being. The wounding of the feeling function is the price we have paid for the cool, precise, . The wound to The Fisher King, via a spear through his testicles (to the tenderest part of the male anatomy), signifies a wounding to man’s sense of potency and his self-esteem. The wounding in this “private part” of himself will not heal and equates to The Fisher Kings “Fall from Grace” (the noble part of the king has fallen from.

That the Fisher King (from The Grail Legend) has taken to fishing while he is waiting for help and healing seems symbolic. Fishing is an activity that requires not only patience, but is dependent upon the right fish, at the right time, taking the bait or in other words, the right element, person, or tool for the healing he seeks.   The Arthurian legend of the Fisher King illustrates how a crisis can have deeper meaning. In one version of the legend, a king is wounded in the thigh in a joist. The wound is extremely painful and prevents the king from doing his duties; all he can do is fish. The wound will not heal although many learned healers are sent for over the years.
